Girl hospitalized after eating 'synthetic' rice

10-year-old girl was rushed to hospital in Medan, North Sumatra, after suffering from a swollen stomach caused by eating rice contaminated with synthetic materials.

The girl's mother, Suriani, said her daughter initially complained of a stomachache after eating rice. She then took her daughter to the nearest clinic.

"The clinic's doctor said my daughter had a wound in her stomach and advised my daughter to eat porridge for a while," Suriani said at Sari Mutiara Hospital on Sunday.

Suriani, a resident of Medan's Tanjung Sari subdistrict, said she then prepared porridge using the same batch of rice that her daughter had previously eaten. After eating the porridge, the girl's condition worsened and she was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

"I was suspicious because my daughter vomited right after eating the porridge," Suriani said. She then asked her community unit head to take a sample of the uncooked rice.

"The community head said that after being tested with water, some of the rice grains were floating," she said, adding that the rice had been handed over to the police.

Sunggal Police detective chief First Insp. Oscar S. Setjo said that the police were still investigating the synthetic rice case.

"The rice is still being tested in the laboratory," he said, adding that test results would be announced immediately. (nvn)
