Jordan to enhance ties with RI

J

ordanian Ambassador to Indonesia Walid Al Hadid said on Monday that his country intended to enhance bilateral ties with Indonesia in numerous fields.

He said a joint committee of the two countries would meet in June to prepare a number of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to sign.

'€œWe have many memorandums of understanding to sign. Our joint committee, Insya Allah, will meet in June in Amman to discuss and enhance bilateral relations,'€ he said on the sidelines of a celebration to mark Jordan'€™s 69th Independence Day on Monday.

The ambassador also received a bouquet of flowers from former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who could not attend the celebration.

'€œWe are celebrating [Independence Day] and also the excellent relations with Indonesia. We are very far away, but close friends,'€ he said.

Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data shows that bilateral trade between Jordan and Indonesia reached $475 million in 2013.

Jordanian King Abdullah II was also among the Asian-African leaders who attended the 65th Asian-African Conference Commemoration in Jakarta and Bandung, West Java, in April.

Also attending the celebration were Prabowo Subianto and a number of legislators. Prabowo, also former commander of the Army'€™s Special Forces (Kopassus), was known to be close with the Jordanian king. He went to Amman, Jordan, after his dishonorable discharge from the military in August 1998 following an inquiry into his involvement in the abduction of student activists. (fsu)
