t least 17 students died instantly when a truck they were riding in plunged into a ravine in Masnauli village, Central Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra, on Thursday.

The traffic unit chief at Central Tapanuli Police, Adj. Comr. M. Syafi'€™I, said that by 9:20 a.m., 17 dead victims had been removed from the scene of the accident.

'€œThere a possibility that the death toll will increase. The police are searching the ravine for more bodies,'€ Syafi'€™I told The Jakarta Post.

He said the truck was carrying 50 students who were children of employees of an oil palm plantation in the regency.

'€œThe incident happened when one of the truck'€™s tires ruptured,'€ he said.
