he popularity of batu akik (popular slang for gemstones) has increased Bali's foreign exchange (forex) earnings since early 2015, according to a report by Antara news agency.
According to the local trade and industry agency, Bali's forex earnings from various kinds of jewelry reached US$15.3 million in the January to June period. In the same period last year, the figure was only $9.5 million.
"Retailers from Singapore and Hong Kong are competing to purchase antique and unique jewelry made using batu akik, which are considered to have supernatural elements," said businessman Made Parsua in Gianyar on Friday.
Australia and the US are also said to be popular markets for the gemstone.
In addition to local batu akik from Kalimantan, jewelry makers also use imported gemstones to address the high demand of the foreign market.
The imported gemstones are then combined with the local ones to create jewelry designed and produced by Balinese people.
Batu akik is popular among both foreign and domestic tourists who often buy them as souvenirs. (kes)
