Six men caned for betting on passing buses in Aceh

The sharia police in Bireun, Aceh conducted a public caning of six men on Wednesday for betting on the names of passing buses.

Nasril bin Bahrum, 44, Rafiqi bin Nurdin, 25, Bachtiar bin Hasan, 40, Iskandar bin M Jamil, 35, Usman bin Ahmad, 29, and Junardi bin M Yusuf, 36, were found guilty of gambling and received seven lashes as punishment.

Bireun Prosecutors'€™ Office representative T Tarmizi said the six convicted gamblers had been arrested on Tuesday

"They were arrested as they placed their bets on the names of buses that would pass their area, with each player paying Rp 5,000 [35 US cents] to the winner," he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

"The winner was the one who guessed the bus's name correctly," added.

The police confiscated nine betting slips with different bus names written on them and Rp 616,000 in cash. (ika)
