Senior lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution was laid to rest with military honors at public cemetery (TPU) Tanah Kusir in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, on Thursday morning.

Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution led the 30 minute funeral ceremony, which started at 9:10 a.m. local time.

'€œOn behalf of this country and nation, I herewith present his soul and body and all of his services to our fatherland,'€ the minister said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Thursday.

'€œIt is hoped that his service, which was of value to the state, can become a model for all of us,'€ he added.

In his speech, Darmin said that the full military honors were conducted out of respect for the services Adnan Buyung contributed throughout his life.

'€œWith his passing, we have lost the best son of the nation. He was faithful to the state, working hard carrying out state duties. What he had done is very useful as a model we all can refer to,'€ said Darmin.

Adnan Buyung was buried beside the tomb of his oldest child, Iken Basya Rinanda Nasution, who passed away in Jakarta on May 14, 2010. Several prominent figures attended the funeral ceremony. They included Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, former Constitutional Court chief justice Jimly Asshiddiqie, former Youth and Sports minister Adhyaksa Dault and senior Indonesian actress Christine Hakim.

The human rights activist died at 81 due to his illnesses in Jakarta at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday. He had been suffering from kidney, gastritis and lung problems.

Former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono awarded a Bintang Mahaputera medal to Adnan Buyung for his services and loyalty to the state in 2010.

Adnan Buyung was survived by his wife, Tengku Sabariah Sabaroedin, and three children, Mauldy Donggur Rinanda Nasution, Rasyid Alam Perkasa Rinanda Nasution and Pia Ariestiana Rinanda Nasution. (edn/ebf)
