The House of Representatives ethics council (MKD) deputy chairman Junimart Girsang says he cannot accept measures taken by several council leaders and members, who secretly questioned House speaker Setya Novanto and his deputy, Fadli Zon, on Thursday.

Junimart said he would reject any evidence that had resulted from the questioning if members of the MKD referred to it when deciding on alleged ethics violations relating to a meeting between Setya and Fadli and US presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

'€œThat was not part of the interrogation for this trial, thus, it cannot be used as a basis for a decision,'€ said Junimart as quoted by kompas.com on the sidelines of an MKD internal meeting at the House complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday.

Junimart said both Setya and Fadli had not fulfilled three separate MKD summonses for questioning, so, it was likely that any decisions made by the ethics council would have to be based only on information from witnesses and documents it had collected so far.

'€œ[The questioning on Thursday] was outside the council'€™s agenda. I don'€™t acknowledge it,'€ he said.

MKD deputy chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said the questioning of Setya and Fadli on Thursday had been known by all members of the council.

On Thursday, he said, the MKD was questioning another House member for a different case. The council later decided that it would also question Setya and Fadli on the same day. '€œWe had distributed invitations to all council members [to attend the questioning],'€ Dasco claimed.

He also claimed that almost all faction representatives in the council, including MKD chairman Surahman Hidayat, attended Thursday'€™s questioning, which was held in the House'€™s Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) room, not in the council'€™s hearing room.

'€œWhere questioning should take place is not a problem. It can be held anywhere,'€ said Dsaco. (ebf)
