Former Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini has won the 2015 Bung Hatta Anti-Corruption Award (BHACA) for her efforts in making Surabaya a clean city in terms of both physical environment and corruption in the governance system.

According to the chair of the BHACA jury panel, Endy M. Bayuni, one of Risma's programs that was considered to be successful in reducing corruption was the e-government system that had been applied in all sectors.

"Ibu Risma's e-government has largely reduced corrupt practices. [The system has also allowed] the people to monitor the developments," Endy told a press conference in Jakarta as quoted by kompas.com.

Risma's breakthroughs actually started when she was still Surabaya administration's program development head, during which time she began an e-procurement system to ensure a more transparent bidding process.

Besides Risma, Batang Regent Yoyok Riyo Sudibyo also received a similar award after eliminating 14 other candidates.

In addition to being clean of corruption, other criteria for the awardees included not abusing their power, being active, inspirational and able to influence the people to eradicate corruption.

The awards ceremony is set to be held on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at Graha Niaga in Central Jakarta.

Besides Endy, other members of the jury panel include anti-corruption activist Aluky D. Djani and Gadjah Mada University'€™s (UGM) Anti-Corruption Study Center director Zainal Arifin Mochtar.

"Hopefully the awardees will share their experience and knowledge in developing a better governance system," said BHACA head of daily committee Natalia Soebagjo.

"Among the many terrible news items in the media about corruption, we need stories of these persons who are inspiring, have integrity and sincerely work for the interests of the people, such as Risma and Yoyok," she added. (kes)
