Australian-based Jetstar airlines, a subsidiary of the Qantas group, plans to open a new Palembang-Singapore route starting Dec. 3. to cater to a large number of potential passengers, according to Jetstar Asia'€™s CEO Barathan Pasupathi.

He said that the airline was trying to benefit from the great potential of the South Sumatra tourist industry.

Meanwhile, South Sumatra governor Alex Noerdin said that the opening of more airline services in the province was a sign of the economic potential of the province.

'€œThe rising number of international airlines opening direct flight routes into Palembang is proof of the economic potential of South Sumatra,'€ said Alex after meeting with airline representatives in Palembang on Wednesday as quoted by Antara news agency. Alex added that it would give people a wider range of air transport options.

South Sumatra provincial administration economic, finance and development assistant Ruslan Bahri said Jetstar would fly three times a week in the first stage of the new route.

The airline will operate an 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft in its maiden flight from Singapore, and then return from Palembang on the same day.

Ruslan also said that athletes participating in the upcoming Asian Games would be able to take advantage of the new route. (liz/bbn)
