Former NasDem Party secretary-general Patrice Rio Capella was sentenced to one year and six months in prison by the Jakarta Corruption Court on Monday
after being found guilty of accepting bribes.
'I accept the verdict, Your Honor. Thank you,' said Rio upon hearing the verdict. Meanwhile, the prosecutors, who had demanded a sentence of two years, said that they might appeal.
Maqdir Ismail, Rio's lawyer, said his client would not appeal to a higher court, as he felt the sentence was fair.
'[Rio] is ready to accept the verdict. One year and six months, he thinks, is a reasonable limit in a corruption case,' Maqdir said.
Rio was found guilty of accepting Rp 200 million (US$14,706) from Evi Susanti, the wife of suspended North Sumatra governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho.
Gatot claimed the money was given to Rio on the understanding that the latter would lobby Attorney General HM Prasetyo, a party colleague, regarding Gatot's own corruption case, which involves the alleged misuse of North Sumatra social funds.
The NasDem Party has denied that Prasetyo had any knowledge of the money paid to Rio. (bbn)
