ne hundred passengers and crew members were rescued by local authorities after the ship they were on burst into flames early Thursday shortly after it left Tenau Port in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
No casualties were reported in the incident.
Kupang Search and Rescue (SAR) Agency head I Ketut Gede Ardana said the rescue operation was initiated once fire started to engulf the port side of KM Sabuk Nusantara 49.
'All 81 passengers and 19 crew members were rescued from the ship,' Ardana told reporters on Thursday.
The 2,090 gross ton (GT) ship is operated by state-owned ship operator PT Pelni and serves the Kupang-Naikliu-Samlaku-Ambon route. The ship will remain at Tenau Port pending further investigation.
Andreas Samiloi, one of the passengers, said he had smelled something like charred wood before he saw smoke on the port side of the ship. 'Many passengers then shouted for help,' he said.
