rosecutors have demanded the panel of judges at the Denpasar district court sentence Australian citizen Scott Dobson, 53, to one-and-a-half years in prison for allegedly assaulting the manager of a nightclub in Kuta, Bali.

The prosecution team accused Dobson of assaulting Kenneth James Wickes, a Canadian, at the Sky Garden night club in September 2013. Dobson was not arrested until December 2015.

"Based on the facts and evidence revealed during the trial, the defendant has been shown to be guilty of violating Article 170 subsection 2 of the Criminal Code on assault," prosecutor IGA Fitria told the court on Monday.

Dobson, a long-term resident of Bali, was accused of hitting Wickes on the second floor of the Sky Garden on September 2013 after he refused to pay a drinks bill. In the indictment it was said Dobson together with his relative Ben Steven and his friend Alex Bajawa, both of whom remain at large, assaulted Wickes.

On the night in question, Wickes received a report from his staff that Dobson and two others with him were refusing to pay their bill. Wickes decided to talk to Dobson who was still enjoying the music, saying "What’s going on? I have three staff members who report that you’re refusing to pay for the drinks. What’s the problem?"

Immediately after Wickes asked about the bill, Dobson allegedly hit him. Steven and Bajawa also reportedly hit Wickes. "The victim suffered bruising to his eyes, wounds to his lip and broken teeth," prosecutors said.

During his trial, Dobson denied all the allegations, saying that he never hit Wickes. He claimed rather that it was himself who was assaulted in the night club.

Prosecutors said it was Dobson’s denials that had led them to demand the sentence. However, the prosecutors said, they also noted the defendant's behavior, who had been well-mannered during the trial. He had also never committed any crime before.

The trial will continue on Thursday to hear the defense  statement.  (ebf)
