Indonesia ensures final slot at Thomas Cup

The Indonesian men’s team beat South Korea 3-1 in the semifinal to ensure its berth in the final stage of the Thomas Cup badminton tournament, in Kunshan, China, on Friday.

he Indonesian men’s team beat South Korea 3-1 in the semifinal to ensure its berth in the final stage of the Thomas Cup badminton tournament, in Kunshan, China, on Friday.

The final showdown, scheduled for Sunday, will be Indonesia's first final in six years. Indonesia last reached the finals in 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, where it bowed 3-0 to China.

In Friday’s semifinal, while Korea’s Son Wan Ho defeated Jonatan Christie 21-10, 21-16, Indonesian pair Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan leveled the score, beating world number one Lee Yong Dae-Yoo Yeon Seong, 21-15, 21-12.

Anthony Ginting added to Indonesia’s edge over Korea with a 21-18, 21-18 victory over Lee Dong Keun.

SEA Games gold medalists Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi ensured Indonesia’s final ticket after beating Korean pair Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang, 21-15, 21-18.

Indonesia will face the winner of the semifinal match between Malaysia and Denmark.

Indonesia last won the Thomas Cup in 2002.
