View all search resultsundreds of armed police were deployed to Gorontalo Penitentiary on Wednesday morning after inmates took over the prison and pushed out security personnel in the course of a riot on Tuesday evening.
The personnel were assigned to guard the prison to anticipate possible further riots, Gorontalo Police chief Adj. Sr. Cmr. Ronny Yulianto said on Wednesday as reported by Antara news agency.
The clash happened after an inmate of the prison stabbed police officer Second Brig. Mohammad Kurniawan Noho on Tuesday evening. Mohammad suffered wounds to his thigh and calf in the attack.
The incident caused heightened tension at Gorontalo prison, with clashes inducing all security personnel to flee.
Antara reported that inmates threw stones, bottles and traditional arrows called wayer at police personnel guarding the exterior of the prison in the early hours of Wednesday. One officer was hit by shards from a glass bottle, sustaining injuries to his leg.
There are as yet no details regarding the cause of the incident. (rin)
