The Jakarta administration has vowed to provide affordable beef for Jakartans, especially residents of low-income subsidized apartments and Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) holders amid the skyrocketing commodity prices during Ramadhan.

The current average beef price in the capital ranges from Rp 116,000 (US$8.8) to Rp 125,000 per kilogram according to infopangan.jakarta.go.id, an official website run by the city administration that provides information on staple foods.

Beef prices jumped following rising demand during the fasting month and supply shortages.

The city administration will hold bazaars from June 27 to July 1, a week before Idul Fitri, in 44 locations across the capital to provide cheap staple foods, including beef, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Tuesday.

The beef would be sold at a starting price of Rp 39,000 per kilogram.

“We will start selling it at the rusunawa. This is a subsidy, so we are paying the price gap," Ahok said on Tuesday.

Ahok’s administration has also started conducting market operations everyday from June 4 to July 17 to help stabilize commodity prices.

Meanwhile, from June 4 to July 17, the administration conducted a market operation in 27 markets from Monday to Friday and in 120 spots from Friday to Sunday where the city administration would increase the supplies of several commodities to help stabilize the price.

The Trade Ministry will increase beef imports to ease the rising price, Trade Minister Thomas Lembong said on Tuesday, promising the beef price will decline within two weeks. The ministry has issued permits for 23,300 tons of beef in addition to extending beef import permit quotas to 27,400 tons for state-owned companies.
