he government has announced its intention to import 180,000 tonnes of beef and is considering to import another 100,000 tonnes of buffalo meat.
National Food Agency (Bapanas) head Arief Prasetyo Adi revealed on Wednesday that the plan had been agreed upon last year.
“It has been decided: 180,000 tonnes, which may be frozen meat or feeder cattle meat. There will be a calculation later,” Arief was quoted as saying by state-owned news agency Antara.
Regarding the possible import of buffalo meat, a final decision was pending a government meeting, Arief said.
“Buffalo meat is normally [imported] for [price] stabilization. We’ll wait for the document from the meeting,” he said, without specifying when that meeting might take place.
Coordinating Food Minister Zulkifli Hasan said on Wednesday that food stocks in general were “safe and sufficient” to get the country through Chinese New Year next week as well as Idul Fitri in March.
Nevertheless, Zulkifli said, the procurement of some other foodstuffs, such as beef, had to be decided soon to brace for Ramadan and Idul Fitri.
