n expert has called on the Jakarta administration to install traffic enforcement cameras across the capital to monitor the implementation of an odd-even license plate policy and prevent bribery practices among traffic police officers.
"It’s better to use cameras to monitor it. In case it rains, the officers would find it hard to do the supervision,” said Achmad Izzul Waro of the Institute of Transportation Studies (Instran) in Jakarta on Friday.
“Those cameras could also be used to prevent the officers from taking hush money from the violators,” he added
However, Jakarta Transportation Agency head Andri Yansyah said the procurement of cameras would take some time. Hence, he preferred to implement it right away, albeit with limited resources.
The Jakarta administration will officially apply an odd-even license plate policy on Aug. 23 on several major roads in Jakarta: Jl. Thamrin, Jl. Sudirman, Jl. Gatot Subroto and Jl. Rasuna Said.
With the new policy, all cars and motorbikes with odd number license plates would be prohibited from using certain thoroughfares on odd dates and vice versa. (vps/bbn)
