early half a million people will exercise their voting rights for the first time in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, an official said on Friday.
"There are around 400,000 new voters out of 7.4 million voters. This is just preliminary data from the population and civil registration agency," Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD Jakarta) chairman Sumarno said as quoted by saying by kompas.com.
Friday is the last day for the commission to update voter data. KPUD Jakarta will now conduct data recapitulation starting from urban communities to the provincial level.
The data update will be used to formulate the preliminary voter list (DPS), Sumarno said.
The DPS will be finalized on Nov. 1 at the municipality level and at the provincial level on Nov. 2. By then, there will be clear detailed data on the characteristics of voters.
KPUD Jakarta will announce the DPS before the commission announces the final voter list (DPT). The announcement aims to inform residents that are not registered yet to immediately register with KPU officials in their neighborhood.
The commission will set the DPT on Nov. 30 to Dec. 6. Jakarta, along with 100 other areas across the country will vote for new local leaders in the 2017 simultaneous regional elections scheduled to take place on Feb. 15, 2017. (rin)
