Life goes on despite flood in East Jakarta

ife goes on as usual for residents in some parts of Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta, despite the floods that hit the area from Friday evening until Monday afternoon. Areas inundated by flood waters include those in the RW04 and RW05 community units.
On Monday, people continued their activities, even though they had to walk through the inundated roads of the neighborhood.
“Children kept on going to school. Most men went to their places of work, although some have opted not to,” said Aswad, 58, head of the RW05 community unit.
As the floodwaters subsided at around midday, people started to clean out mud from their houses and the surrounding area.
“The water level was about one meter high in my house last night. But for houses close to Ciliwung River, it was much higher,” said Nani, 60.
The area was flooded by water from the upper Bogor region in West Java.
“This happens annually. In 2007, the water reached our second floor,” said Sanusi, 49, head of the RW04 community unit.
Sanusi added that people would not leave their houses if the water did not reach the second floor.
In anticipation of flooding, residents prepare themselves by removing valuable belongings from the first floor. Last weekend’s flood was the first of this year. (lly)
