akarta gubernatorial candidate Anies Baswedan has expressed his optimism that he and his running mate Sandiaga Uno will get past the first round in Jakarta’s gubernatorial election.

“Now the most important thing is to pray for a positive result. We hope God can open the hearts of Jakartans [to vote] for me,” Anies told reporters after casting his vote at Polling Station No. 28 on Wednesday.

Anies said that after doing his best during the campaign period, Jakartans could see that he and Sandiaga were the right candidate pair to lead the capital.

However, the candidate refused to answer when asked who was his stronger rival, incumbent Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama or former military officer Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.

After a four-month campaign period, more than 7 million Jakartans are expected to cast their votes in Wednesday’s election, which takes place simultaneously with regional elections in many other parts of the country.

Various recent polls have suggested that Anies and Ahok will go through to the second round, while Agus will be eliminated in the first round. (trw)
