he Jakarta administration plans to procure a controlled atmosphere storage (CAS) facility to store chilies in a bid to ensure sufficient supplies and thus keep prices low, an official has said.
“One of the causes of the chili price hike is insufficient supply. The use of technology is expected to help address the problem,” Jakarta Economic Affairs Bureau head Sri Haryati said at City Hall on Tuesday as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
She said that the administration would intensify its campaign to encourage Jakartans to plant chilies at their homes. The city’s Marine, Agriculture and Food Security Agency (KPKP) would provide the seeds, she added.
“At least, it will be able to cover people’s daily needs,” she said.
The price of chili has skyrocketed recently and has reportedly reached Rp 140,000 (US$10.46) per kilogram at some markets in the city. (fac)
