akartans living near riverbanks can meet their vegetable requirements from urban farming as has been shown by residents of the Ciliwung riverbank in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
A 250-meter plot of land on the Ciliwung riverbank has been turned into an urban farm and has been planted with vegetables, herbs and chili, said Sehati farming group leader Yanny Maya on Tuesday.
“We have 46 kinds of trees here,” said Yanny as quoted by beritajakarta.com, adding that local residents had used the crops for their own consumption.
Central Jakarta Food Security, Agriculture and Maritime Agency head Bayu Sari Hastuti said that the Menteng urban farm was one of the success stories in the city.
“The municipal agency has been helping the residents by giving them training and other development programs,” she said.
According to earlier reports, an urban farm has also been developed on Jl. Pramuka, Central Jakarta. (kkk)
