R

esidents found a live newborn baby boy abandoned in a garbage site on Jl. Brig. Gen. Katamso, Medan, North Sumatra, on Friday. It is suspected the baby, who is still about three days old, was intentionally abandoned by his parents.

Medan Kota Police chief Comr. Martuasah Tobing said the baby was alive when residents found him in the garbage dump, which was located in front of a motorcycle spare parts store. They reported their discovery to Adj. First Insp. Irwansyah, an on-duty Medan Kota Police officer.

“Shortly after he received the abandoned baby report, the officer went to the location to secure the ill-fated baby,” Martuasah told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

The police chief said the baby was in poor condition when he was found. He had been put in a cardboard box and covered with a piece of cloth.

“The police are investigating this case to find the parents who abandoned their baby,” said Martuasah, adding the police had entrusted the baby to a clinic in Kampung Baru.

Anyone suspected of abandoning a baby could be charged with violating Article 77 of the 2002 Child Protection Law and the Criminal Code’s (KUHP) Article 305 on child protection and Article 49 on domestic violence, the police said. (ebf)
