Greater Jakarta: Bullying of autistic student sparks outcry

A

video shows a university student wearing a grey hoodie looking frustrated as he stretches his arms out in front of his body to maintain his balance, while a boy in a black shirt pulls at his backpack and laughs.

The people who surround him seem excited to see the disturbed expression on the young man’s face. Some of them try to annoy him by laughing and clapping their hands in front of his eyes, while others just watch and record the action. No one does anything to help the student.

The young man does not say anything. He stares at the floor of the hallway as he tries to escape. He finally gets free and walks away from the crowd that continues shouting and laughing at him.

The 12-second video was posted on the Instagram account @jullliocrazy with the caption “The throwing of the deadly trash can” because at the end of it, the student in the hoodie throws a trash can at the people who bullied him.

It was later found out that the young man in the grey hoodie was a student with autism, who was often bullied because of his condition. Everyone captured in the video were students of the School of Computer and Information Technology at Gunadarma University.

The video sparked public outcry, with many condemning the alleged bullies over social media.

The school’s student council confirmed that the incident took place and expressed regret.

“We hope the public will not judge our institution and the individuals [involved],” the council stated on its Instagram account.
