Bangka Belitung Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan has announced the province’s decision to issue a moratorium on tin mining licenses to ease the sector’s environmental impact
angka Belitung Governor Erzaldi Rosman Djohan has announced the province’s decision to issue a moratorium on tin mining licenses to ease the sector’s environmental impact.
"We want tin mining companies to improve their mining methods,” the governor said in the provincial capital of Pangkalpinang as reported by Antara.
During the moratorium, the government would not issue new mining licenses or extend existing licenses, Erzaldi said.
The move is expected to curb illegal mining and illegal exports of tin ores, the governor said, adding that mining companies had illegally exported tin ore via unregistered harbors.
The government is currently drafting new mining regulations related to ecologically friendly tin mining methods.
Indonesia is one of the largest tin producers in the world and Bangka Belitung is the country’s largest tin producing province. (bbn)
