T Pharos Indonesia, a producer of the Viostin DS food supplement, has recalled and destroyed the product after the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) found it contained pork derivatives.
Pharos Indonesia spokesperson Ida Nurtika said the recall process for the 20 tons of product began in November 2017.
“The destroying [of the product] reflects our transparency and our responsibility to society,” Ida said in a statement received by The Jakarta Post on Friday.
Previously, beef, instead of pork, was used a raw material in Viostin DS, the company said in a press statement. However, it had recalled the product after the BPOM finding.
In addition to the Viostin DS supplement, the Enzyplex supplement had also been recalled over concerns of pork derivatives. The BPOM instructed its representatives throughout the country to closely monitor the process to ensure the products were completely recalled from the market.
The BPOM laboratory tested samples from Viostin DS batch BN C6K994H, produced by PT Pharos Indonesia, and Enzyplex batch 16185101, produced by PT Medifarma Laboratories.
Pharos said that although the BPOM only required that the company recall certain batches of the product, it preferred to recall all Viostin DS from the market. (bbn)
