ice President Jusuf Kalla has assured dozens of Rohingya refugees cast ashore on Kuara Bireuen Beach in Aceh on Friday they will be accommodated in a shelter.
“Our nation’s principles require us to welcome those refugees, give them shelter and provide them with food,” said Kalla on Tuesday.
The Vice President said he would collaborate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to handle the matter.
“Refusing those who seek refuge in our country is just the same as defying the second principle of [ the state ideology] Pancasila,” he said, referring to the principle, which is “A Just and Civilized Humanity”.
Bireuen Deputy Regent Muzakkar A.Gani said the Rohingya refugees had been found by a local fisherman.
“They stayed on the beach to receive proper medical treatment because they could barely drink or eat anything,” Muzakkar said as quoted by kompas.com. (dpk/ebf)
