J

akarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno launched on Friday an app-based bike-sharing service called “GOWES” at the National Monument (Monas) Park in Central Jakarta for visitors who want to cycle around the park for free.

One hundred bicycles have been provided, which can be rented by visitors who have downloaded the GOWES app on the Google Play Store or Apple's App Store.

The service was launched through cooperation between the Jakarta administration, PT Surya Teknologi Perkasa, GOWES' app developer, and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) Indonesia.

Sandiaga said the service would be run on a trial basis for three months to see the enthusiasm of visitors in using the bike.

“I hope the bike-sharing progam can be integrated with the Transjakarta service. Therefore, it won’t only be used inside Monas. It may help Transjakarta reach the target of 1 million of passengers per day,” Sandiaga said according to a statement published by the ITDP.

With tracking and digital map features on the app, users will not be required to return the bicycles to certain spots as they can park them anywhere inside Monas.
