he Jakarta Police have rejected the request of detained businessman Richard Muljadi to marry at the Jakarta Cathedral this month. Richard, who was arrested on suspicion of using drugs, would only be allowed to hold a ceremony behind bars.
Drug investigation director Sr. Comr. Suwondo Nainggolan said the businessman and heir to oil, gas and mining company PT Mulia Graha Abadi, had submitted the request through his lawyer, Hotma Sitompul.
“We’ve discussed the request with Irwasda [regional monitoring inspectorate], the legal bureau, Propam [Internal Affairs Division], also with assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department [Bareskrim]. We’ve decided that we won’t release him so that he can marry outside the detention center,” Suwondo added as quoted by kompas.com. Richard is detained at the Jakarta Police’s detention center in South Jakarta.
“They still can get married but at the detention center, like other detainees [who want to get married],” Suwondo said.
Richard was arrested on Aug. 22 after police officers reportedly caught him sniffing cocaine in the bathroom of a South Jakarta shopping mall.
The suspect is the grandson of lawyer, former judge and pharmaceutical tycoon Kartini Muljadi, the 44th richest Indonesian according to a 2017 Forbes list. (srz)
