he Jakarta administration is set to develop disposal-transit facilities for hazardous and toxic waste (B3) in four places in Jakarta, including in Semper, North Jakarta, as each year electronic waste generates up to 3 tons of B3 alone.
The budgeting team of Jakarta City Council has approved the allocation of around Rp 1.4 billion (US$ 93,926) for the development of the facilities, which will contain the waste temporarily before being processed by third parties, next year.
The size of one site is expected to be between 80 and 100 square meters.
Jakarta Environment Agency head Isnawa Adji said the administration wanted to properly manage the waste.
"It is true that we are late in developing such facilities, but better late than never. We have received a lot of suggestions about building such facilities," Isnawa said on Monday as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
There are also other kinds of waste, such as medical waste, that is gathered by health facilities before being processed by third parties. The city administration wants to make sure this is not mixed with other waste, he said.
He added that the waste gathered at the disposal sites would be processed by companies that usually processed the B3.
Isnawa said the agency would provide special vehicles to collect the waste from neighborhoods. (cal)
