An embankment repaired last year has helped mitigate flooding, but has not prevented sea water seepage inundating houses.
Residents of Kampung Luar Batang in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, have complained about sea water seepage reaching their houses.
“The floods here are not that severe now, but there is still seepage from the sea,” Samsukur, a neighborhood unit (RT) head told kompas.com on Monday.
He added that an embankment repaired last year following a 50 centimeter flood that hit the area had helped mitigate flooding, but that it still did not prevent seepage from inundating houses.
Tari, a resident of the area, said that the seepage inundated her house everyday but that the amount varied depending on sea conditions.
As previously reported, the North Jakarta Water Resources Agency has acknowledged the problem and has worked to repair the embankment and prepared hundreds of sandbags. (fac)
