he government has given a guarantee that the electricity supply in Labuan Bajo, a tourist resort branded as a "New Bali" in East Nusa Tenggara, would remain more than enough for tourists and residents to celebrate the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations.
State-owned electricity company PLN's unit manager for the West Flores service, Firman Raharja, said the company had also assigned officers to guarantee a secure electricity supply for Labuan Bajo and its neighboring areas during the celebrations.
“PLN in Labuan Bajo assigns 39 officers on duty,” said Firman in a press statement issued by the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry on Tuesday.
Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry electricity supervision director general Hendra Iswahyudi said on Tuesday PLN had prepared generator sets and assigned operators for churches on Flores Island to assure that they would receive an adequate electricity supply.
Hendra said based on a report from PLN, the electricity demand in Manggarai, including Labuan Bajo and Ruteng, tended to increase during the Christmas season because the majority of the population is Christian.
“It is different from other regions, where electricity demands tend to go down during the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations,” Hendra said when inspecting the electricity infrastructure in Labuan Bajo, Manggarai Barat regency, East Nusa Tenggara.
“It is because of the increase of electricity use in hotels and churches, as well as in households because the people display Christmas illuminations in their houses.”
PLN reported that electricity consumption on Dec. 24 increases to 20.35 megawatts, while the available supply is 37 MW. (bbn)
