Deep grief and sorrow has come into the lives of the Indonesian people again after a tsunami hit Banten and Lampung on Saturday. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that the tsunami occurred at around 9:30 p.m. local time.

The tsunami, which affected coastal areas around the Sunda Strait, Banten and Lampung, was the result of an eruption at Anak Krakatau, experts said. The eruption led part of the volcano’s side to collapse, causing a tsunami that hit coastal areas in Banten and Lampung.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that as of Tuesday, 429 people had been killed, 1,485 had been injured and 154 others remained missing. Meanwhile, 16,082 people are reported to have sought refuge at temporary shelters. The data is compiled from reports from at least three areas, namely Pandeglang and Serang in Banten and South Lampung in Lampung. Pandeglang has recorded the highest death toll of 290.

The emergency response in Pandeglang will last 14 days until Jan. 4, while in South Lampung, it will last seven days until Dec. 29.
