t least four people are dead, while 41 others remain missing after a landslide struck Sirnaresmi village in Sukabumi, West Java, on Monday, following torrential rain.
“The latest report [from the ground] suggests that at least eight people were believed to have been buried. Four bodies have been retrieved, while the rescue team is still trying to retrieve the remaining four. It was difficult because it was raining and very dark [on Monday night],” National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Tuesday.
Four people were injured and rushed to a local hospital to receive medical treatment, while 61 survivors have been moved to a temporary shelter.
Sutopo said the search and rescue team faced difficulties in moving heavy equipment to rescue victims.
However, he ensured that a joint team comprising local officers, military and police personnel, would continue the search for survivors despite the bad weather.
"It was still raining in the location. The road was too steep and rocky," Sutopo said, adding that the electricity and communication network in the area had also been shut down.
“Our team on the field is communicating via walkie talkie," he said. (ggq/swd)
