An East Jakarta elementary school wall that was reportedly poorly maintained due to budget constraints was heavily damaged by rainfall on Thursday morning.
eavy rain that poured early morning on Thursday knocked down a wall at SD 05 Pagi state elementary school in Penggilingan, East Jakarta.
“It was an old wall. The rain was so strong. The wall toppled at 6:30 a.m.,” said the school's principal, Jintar Pakpahan, as quoted by kompas.com.
Jintar said the wall was poorly maintained due to budget constraints and that he had submitted proposals yearly to the district and subdistrict administrations about an increased budget but to no avail. He also said he reported the incident to the administrations.
The wall debris, which had been cleared up, was replaced with temporary bamboo fencing, he added.
“We plan to rebuild the wall over a total area of 250 square meters,” he said. (vla)
