34-year-old man has been arrested in Central Balikpapan district, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, for allegedly growing cannabis.

The police said they confiscated 15 cannabis shrubs and several potted plants from the home of Jauhari, who reportedly got the seeds from a seller in the provincial capital of Samarinda and learning about cultivating them from YouTube.

“According to the suspect, the marijuana [plants] are around one to seven months old,” East Kalimantan Police narcotics unit head Sr. Comr. Akhmad Shauris said over the weekend.

Arresting officers also found 15 packages of dried cannabis as well as seeds in pots ready for planting.

Jauhari confessed that he planted the Cannabis for his own consumption, mixing it with tobacco before smoking.

“I planted the seeds in plastic bottles filled with soil. When they became seedlings, I moved them to the pots,” Jauhari told reporters at the police station after his arrest.

The police made the arrest after receiving several reports from Jauhari’s neighbors.

Growing cannabis is prohibited under Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics, except for scientific purposes and with a permit from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM).

The police said Jauhari is facing 20 years in prison and a fine of Rp 8 billion (US$568,764).

“Although he said he consumed them for himself, we are investigating [other possibilities],” Akhmad said. (foy)
