iving in an area that is prone to flooding during the rainy season has prompted residents of Rawa Terate subdistrict in East Jakarta to allow their children play in the flooded streets.
On Wednesday morning, three children were seen playing in water that was about 80 centimeters deep, occasionally splashing each other.
Due to the area being inundated at midnight, the children did not go to school.
“We love playing in the water,” said one of the children named Devi.
Parents living in the area have allowed their children play in the flooded streets without being too concerned.
“It’s OK. They enjoy playing in the water because [they] are used to it,” a local resident, Lesti, said as quoted by kompas.com.
Because flooding is a common occurrence, residents have built two-story houses to keep their household goods safe.
“I have put all my household goods on the second floor. It is always [flooding] every time the rainy season comes,” Lesti said. (sau)
