housing complex in Depok, West Java, was left inundated on Wednesday following the collapse of sheet piles by the banks of the Jantung River.
The collapsed of 20-meter-high and 100-m-long sheet piles also caused a landslide along the riverbank and damage to a house in the Tirta Mandala housing complex.
Sukamaju subdistrict head Nurhadi said the 20 to 60 cm flooding was caused by the overflowing Jantung River water that could not be contained by the sheet piles.
"Also, less water infiltrates [ the ground] due to the development of houses around the river," he said, kompas.com reported.
Nurhadi said the permit for the housing complex was in the process of being acquired.
Furthermore, he would communicate with the Public Works and Housing Ministry to resolve the problem.
"We will ask the ministry to deploy heavy equipment and reinstall the sheet piles," he added. (sau)
