The Jakarta Police have arrested two individuals of a Jakarta-Pontianak-Malaysia network for their alleged involvement in distributing methoxetamine (MXE), which is believed to be able to cause suicidal thoughts in consumers.
National Police dangerous drug laboratory and forensics directorate chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Juswanto said that after examining the drug, he discovered that it contained a substance that can make users temporarily feel happy as well as increasing empathy, peace and solemnity. In the long term, the drug can make users feel anxious, shaky and queasy, cause difficulty speaking and even induce suicidal thoughts.
“MXE is illegal and when abused it doesn’t only spark joy but can also bring harm such as suicidal thoughts,” he said at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday as quoted by kompas.com.
The two individuals, identified by their initials SS and ST, were arrested on Feb 12, while allegedly trying to carry out a drug transaction at Husada Hospital in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta.
The police then discovered and confiscated 9,000 methoxetamine tablets in SS’s apartment in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The police also confiscated other illegal drugs such as ecstasy and crystal methamphetamine.
The suspects are charged under the 2009 law on illegal drugs, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment. (fac)
