Suspected MIT fighter killed in Poso

The two suspected terrorists had previously been identified in relation to another case and were being sought by the police.

entral Sulawesi police chief Brig. Gen. Lukman Wahyu Hariyanto has confirmed the killing of one suspected member and the arrest of another suspected member of the Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen (MIT) in Poso regency after an armed conflict with security forces broke out on Sunday around 5 p.m. local time.

“Yes, we have received information that one was killed and another one was arrested alive. One firearm was also seized,” Lukman said.

He said the two suspected terrorists had previously been identified in relation to another case and were being sought by the police.

The armed conflict between MIT fighters and the Indonesian Army’s Special Forces' (Kopassus)  Operation Tinombala Task Force occurred at a plantation on the south shore of Poso.

Prior to the shootout, the Kopassus task force led by Maj. Aryudha received information from locals that five MIT fighters were resting in a plantation around midday.

He said the police had taken the deceased suspect to the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Palu. The apprehended suspect is currently being questioned.

“We are continuing to search for other terrorism suspects,” he added. (das)
