olice in Langkat regency, North Sumatra, are investigating a case that claims 23 students of a madrasah (Islamic school) in Serapuh ABC village, Padang Tualang district, have been raped.
The suspected rapist has been identified as Dedi Suwandi, 40 , who is also a civil servant. The police have arrested him.
“We have detained the perpetrator,” Langkat Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Doddy Hermawan said Wednesday evening.
The case came to light on Tuesday when a parent of one of the alleged victims filed a police report on Wednesday, Doddy said.
The parent said their child had been repeatedly raped by the suspect since April 2018, Doddy added.
Langkat Women and Child Empowerment Integrated Service Center (P2TP2A) coordinator Enis Safrin Adlin said the case should not be tolerated.
“This is really embarrassing,” said Enis, demanding that the suspect face severe punishment to create a deterrent effect should he be found guilty. (swa)
