ice-presidential candidate Sandiaga Uno has promised to buy back shares of telecommunication company Indodat Ooredoo if he and his running mate, Prabowo Subianto, win the election on April 17. The company is controlled by Qatar Telecom.
He said the government needed to realize the plan to buyback Indosat as stated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo when he sought the presidency in 2014.
“In fact, Pak Jokowi’s idea to buy back Indosat was good. […] We will talk to Qatar so that we can collaborate [with the company],” Sandiaga said in Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The government sold 40 percent of Indosat’s shares to Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte Ltd (ST Telemedia) in 2002 and then the latter sold the shares to Qatar Telecom.
Jokowi pledged to buy back the shares during the presidential election campaign in 2014. However, the President has not realized the promise. (bbn)
