Among the car brands that are taking part in the show are Mitsubishi, Suzuki, BMW, Chevrolet, Mini and Nissan, while the motorcycle brands include high-end BMW Motorrad, Harley-Davidson and Husqvarna.
n annual automotive event, the 10-day Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS), kicked off on Thursday to run until May 5 at Jakarta International Expo (Jiexpo) Kemayoran in Central Jakarta.
PT Dyandra Media International general commissioner Lilik Oetama, a member of the show's organizing committee, said this year's IIMS would feature more new models and products from at least 26 brands and automakers.
Among the car brands taking part in the show are Mitsubishi, Suzuki, BMW, Chevrolet, Mini and Nissan, while the motorcycle brands include high-end BMW Motorrad, Harley-Davidson and Husqvarna.
“Visitors could also enjoy rare sights, such as an off-highway caterpillar truck that is usually only found at a mining site,” said Lilik. “This year, we are aiming for more than 500,000 visitors and transactions of Rp 4 trillion (US$282.52 million).”
Meanwhile, Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the automotive industry would always be a source of pride for Indonesia's manufacturing sector.
He said that in 2018, Indonesia produced 1.34 million cars nationally, 346,000 of which were exported. “The automotive industry will become a hope for our exports this year. We hope to export 400,000 cars this year,” said Airlangga in his opening speech at the event.
He also expressed confidence that domestic sales of automobiles would keep growing this year, especially after the smooth presidential and legislative elections.
“Automotive sales are expected to grow until the end of the year. Usually, after general elections, investment and employment grow. The automotive market is expected also to grow,” he said.
According to the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo), car sales in the domestic market are expected to decrease to 1.1 million this year from 1.15 million in 2018. The association also recorded 1.07 million car sales in 2017 and 1.06 million in 2016. (bbn)
