he Jakarta Police are to start ticketing violators of the odd-even license plate number policy through an electronic ticketing system (ETLE) in May.
"We will start enforcing the ETLE system for the odd-even policy on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman on May 1 or 5," said the head of the police traffic unit's vehicle registration document section, Comr. Arif Fazlurrahman, as quoted by antaranews.com on Thursday.
"While we keep introducing the new system to road users, we are still improving and installing more cameras from Harmoni [Central Jakarta] to the Senayan traffic circle [South Jakarta]. Hence, we can start implementing [the ticketing] in May," he added.
On Thursday, the Jakarta Police's traffic unit introduced the new system to road users at the Sarinah intersection in Central Jakarta, emphasizing its implementation at intersections on Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman.
The police had installed 10 CCTV cameras at intersections along those roads, adding to the two cameras that had already been working near Sarinah and the Arjuna Wiwaha statue.
There are three kinds of devices used in the ETLE system, namely an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera, a checkpoint camera and a speed radar.
The ANPR camera can capture the vehicle's license plate number, synchronize it with data on a vehicle database and determine the violation the driver committed.
The checkpoint camera can further elaborate on the kind of violation, such as if the driver violated the plate number rule, did not wear a safety belt or used a mobile phone while driving.
The speed radar, meanwhile, is a sensor that is connected to the checkpoint camera to detect a vehicle's speed in real time. The sensor would give notification should a certain vehicle exceed the speed limit. (vla)
