T

he Jakarta Transportation Agency has opened registration for free mudik (exodus) trips for more than 15,000 Jakartans ahead of Idul Fitri.

Idul Fitri marks the end of Ramadan, which will be determined in an isbat (confirmation) meeting held by the Religious Affairs Ministry on May 5.

The end of the holy month is estimated to fall on June 5, although the date is subject to change depending on the decision of another isbat meeting usually held a day before Lebaran.

“We want to help people who want to return to their hometowns for Idul Fitri,” Jakarta Transportation Agency acting head Sigit Wijatmiko said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.

This program is open to people holding ID cards or family cards issued in Jakarta. Ten cities have been designated as destinations for the program participants, namely Ciamis and Kuningan in West Java; Tegal, Pekalongan, Semarang, Kebumen, Surakarta, Wonogiri in Central Java; Jombang in East Java and Yogyakarta.

To participate in the free mudik program, applicants are required to fill out a registration form on  mudikgratis.jakarta.go.id. After obtaining a booking code, they need to verify their registration by visiting the Jakarta Transportation Agency or local transportation agency on weekdays.

“We’ve prepared 307 buses for 16,578 passengers, as well as 139 trucks to carry 6,255 motorcycles for this program,” Sigit said.

The buses will begin departing from the National Monument on May 30. The mudik entourage is slated to leave their respective destinations back to Jakarta on June 8. (kuk)
