T

he Greater Jakarta Coordination Board (BKSP) has revealed a plan to create five park and ride facilities on the outskirts of Jakarta to reduce the number of private vehicles in the capital city.

The plan was announced after BKSP secretary Tri Kurniadi met West Java provincial administration secretary Iwa Karniwa in Bandung on Monday.

"Our idea is to ensure that people from Bekasi, Bogor and Tangerang don’t enter the city with their private vehicles. Instead, they would park their vehicles at the park and ride spots and then use LRT trains or Transjakarta buses," Tri said as quoted by tempo.co.

The park and ride facilities are to be built in various locations of West Java, such as Bekasi regency, Bekasi city, Bogor regency and Bogor city.

"Almost 1 million vehicles from the satellite cities enter Jakarta every day," Tri added.

The BKSP will complete the detailed engineering design this year and proceed with the construction in 2020.

"The budget will be allocated by the Jakarta administration, while the respective administrations will be in charge of land procurement," Tri said.

He added that the budget funds would depend on specific aspects of the park and ride facilities, which would cost at least Rp 1 billion (US$70,000). One park and ride area is expected to accommodate 1,000 vehicles. (vla)
