fter years of preparation, the government has enforced a legal umbrella for the services of app-based ojek(motorcycle taxi).
The Transportation Ministry said as part of its initial stage, a ministerial regulation on motorcycle safety and a ministerial decree on minimum fares for ojek services had come into effect in five cities on Wednesday.
“The regulation related to app-based ojek online will initially take effect in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Makassar. We will evaluate the regulation implementation after a week,” Minister Budi Karya Sumadi told the press on Tuesday.
Budi said the ministry would then evaluate user response and feedback from relevant parties, such as ride-hailing service providers Go-Jek Indonesia and Grab Indonesia.
“If there is no reaction or turmoil in the [regulation] implementation in the five cities, we will fully implement it [across Indonesia],” said Budi.
Land Transportation Director General Budi Setyadi hopes both drivers and applicators obey the regulation, especially since the regulation has accommodated the interests of multiple stakeholders, from ride-hailing operators, driver associations, experts and the government.
“To oversee the regulation implementation, we are working with the Business Competition Supervisory Commission [KPPU],” he said.
