Indonesians were more inclined to spend money on consumer goods in April than a month earlier, as indicated in a rise in Bank Indonesia’s latest consumer confidence index.

According to the survey results released on Tuesday, the consumer confidence index (IKK) rose to 128.1 points from 124.5 in March, indicating greater optimism among consumers about the domestic economy.

An IKK reading above 100 reflects general hopefulness, while index values below 100 signify pessimism.

“The strengthening of consumers’ perceptions of the current and future state of the economy pushed the IKK higher,” BI wrote in its survey report.

According to the report, the current income subindex, which is based on consumers’ income levels, rose to 124.8 points in April from 121.4 in March, marking the second monthly rise in a row.

The index for intended purchases of durable goods also increased in April, rising to 114 points from 110.1 in the preceding month.

As a result, consumers – especially those earning more than Rp 2 million (US$140) and below the age of 60 – are more willing to spend on durable goods, especially electronic devices like hand phones, televisions and computers.
