Cigarette producer PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna, owned by United States-based Philip Morris International, is considering selling its new “heated tobacco” device called the iQos in Indonesia after the product launch in Malaysia last month.
iQos, an electronic device, was introduced by Philip Morris in 2014. Instead of burning tobacco like conventional cigarettes, the device heats it and generates a smoke-free nicotine-filled vapor when inhaled.
The device has been sold commercially in several countries around the globe such as Japan, the United States and South Africa. The device has also recently been introduced in Malaysia under a different name.
Sampoerna president director Mindaugas Trumpaitis said on Thursday the company conducted a market testing event in March to introduce iQos to the Indonesian public to see the consumers’ behavior and learn their preferences around the product.
Although it has concluded the market test, the publicly listed company has yet to determine when it will launch the product commercially in Indonesia as it still needs to develop it to fit the consumers’ preferences, he said.
