As reported by Antara news agency, the explosion could be heard within a 5-kilometer radius. Residents who were in the vicinity at 4 p.m. said the minibuses exploded when people were unloading several hundred firecrackers from the vehicles.
“It all happened very fast. There was suddenly a bomb-like explosion. I didn’t go anywhere near the burning cars, but then I saw four people nearby who had sustained serious injuries to their faces and other body parts,” an eyewitness, who is a public transportation driver, told Antara.
The victims have been identified as Sultan, 40, Herman, 48, M. Yudi, 18 and Hamdan, 23. A passerby, Zakiyah, 56, was also injured as she was driving past the minibuses on her motorcycle when the firecrackers suddenly exploded. They were immediately taken to the R. Syamsudin SH Hospital in Sukabumi for medical treatment.
The Sukabumi Police are still investigating the incident. Officers have confiscated the remaining firecrackers as evidence.
During Ramadan and Idul Fitri, the sales of firecrackers usually increase because many people light them to celebrate the occasion. (rfa)
